DNC Procedure?

D&C procedure is short form for 'dilation and curettage procedure.' Dilation and curettage procedures are conducted on the uterus of female-bodied people to remove a sample of tissue from the uterus to examine either for completeness (as a treatment after a miscarriage or abortion) or for abnormalities arising from conditions of the uterus (such as polycystic ovary syndrome or other abnormal uterine bleeding).

Dilation and curettage can also be used as a method of abortion in the first trimester, however, this is rare. The dilation and curettage procedure is a two step process. The first step, dilation, involves either administering a drug to soften the lower part of the uterus (called the cervix), or widening the opening using a slender rod (called a laminaria). After the cervix is dilated, an instrument shaped like a rod with a sharp spoon or loop shape called a curette is inserted into the uterus. The curette scrapes off tissue samples for testing, or removes excess tissue present in the uterus.
