In designing electrical circuits it's important to know the voltage the circuit must handle. However, since voltages may alternate between negative and positive, as with AC current, you cannot measure it directly. So the average voltage is calculated instead. This is value is referred to as The Root Mean Square of the wave forms voltage, ie Vrms. For standard AC current it can be approximated as simply Voltage x 0.707.
