The chemical element magnesium is a silvery white solid that was discovered by Joseph Black in 1755. He at first thought magnesium and calcium were the same element. Magnesium was not officially isolated on its own until 1808 by Sir Humphrey Davy. The magnesium element has 12 electrons, 12 protons and 12 neutrons. A magnesium ion exists in the center of every chlorophyll molecule. Magnesium is also an element that is essential to the human body. In seawater, magnesium is the second most abundant metal after sodium.
