Example of Connotation in a Poem?

Answer

In poetry, as in all literature, the term connotation is used when a word has a feeling to it in addition to the dictionary definition. For example, the word home means a place to live, but it also brings about feelings of warmth and love. An example of connotation in a poem, is in Robert Frost's poem Mending Wall. In the poem, he speaks of a wall between two people that are walking. The wall is a connotation of emotional distance between the two people.
