The price of swine (pork) or hogs is a general indicator of agricultural market health. Over the last 30 years in the US, the price has fluctuated from a top price of $1.68 per pound in July of 1986 to a low of $0.23 per pound in February of 1999. Over the past ten years, the price has remained fairly stable at approximately $0.75 per pound. As of March 2013, the price was $0.81 per pound for lean hogs in the United States.
