How Can a Spacecraft Travel at a Constant Speed with the Engines off?

I learned in science class that an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. On earth the external force is gravity. Gravity slows things down when they're not being propelled. In space there is no gravity to slow down the ship, so it will stay in constant motion unless something hits it.
