Although doctors could have amputated Marley's foot to prevent the cancer from spreading, Marley's Rastafarian religion forbids amputation. He reportedly received holistic treatment and a skin graft in an attempt to stop the cancer, but it was insufficient to save his life. He was only 36 when he died.

Rumors have circulated that Marley's death was an assassination by the CIA. These theories propose that an agent gave Marley a pair of boots with a hidden source of radioactivity that caused his cancer.
