Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was born on June 17, 1898 and died of a rare cancer on March 27, 1972 at the age of 73. It was in 1964 that Escher went to North America again to see his son and deliver a series of lectures but fell ill almost immediately upon arrival. After surgery in Toronto, he and his wife returned to Holland where they stayed until his death.
