How did Static Major die?

Stephen Ellis Garrett, a.k.a. Static/Major, died on February 25, 2008, due to medical complications related to the placement of a catheter. This is based on the autopsy report from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

On the same day he died, Static/Major checked himself into Baptist Hospital East, where he was diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis. Dr. Dean J. Wickel was the surgeon who implanted a dialysis catheter into the musician’s neck to treat him. According to Dr. Wickel, Garrett’s X-rays showed that the catheter line was placed incorrectly. He then instructed a nurse to remove it, and once she did, the patient began to lose consciousness.
