The Spanish civil war began as a result of polarisation of Spanish life and politics over several decades. The country's citizens with support from the military decided to revolt against the Republican government of Spain which was being supported by conservatives. The civil war began as a result of failure of the first military coup.

Spain was initially a powerful country but by the 20th century, it was a poor and backward country where corruption was rife. It had lost nearly all of its overseas possessions (e.g. Cuba ) and great gaps of wealth caused severe social tensions. These tensions eventually led to war and reflected the political disputes occurring in Europe at the time between Fascism and democracy on the one hand and the opposition to godless Communism on the other.
