How Do Children End up in Foster Care?

Answer

Physical abuse, sexual abuse, general neglect, medical neglect, incarceration of a parent, and abandonment are among the most common reasons why a child would end up in foster care. Another adult in the child's life, a teacher for example, might contact Child Protective Services, or its local equivalent, which is a governmental agency that responds to reports of child abuse or neglect. If the situation was deemed severe enough, the child could be placed into foster care.
