How do i fit a wood burning stove?

Answer

Fitting a wood burning stove or fire carries no stipulation that the work cannot be carried out by a DIY enthusiast. All work however does have to comply with part J of the building regulations. A wood burning stove should be fitted at the same time, or soon after a flue liner has been installed if one is required. Wood burning stoves and fires are, in themselves, fairly simple.

There should be a gap of 150mm on each side of the stove to non flammable materials and 230mm if there are flammable materials to the side. You should have 230mm above the stove to non combustible materials and 460mm above the stove if there are flammable materials (for example wood). You should position the stove at least 50mm from the back of the stove to the back wall. Your hearth should extend at least 225mm in front of the stoves firebox. You should also ensure that if your stove has a greater output than 5kw you must have an air vent in the room venting out to an external air source.

When fitting a wood burning stove, you will need a register plate which will serve as a seal. It has a hole intended for the flue pipe supported by a bracket and a sweeping access.
