How do I know if my car needs a new alternator?

The only way to be sure your alternator is bad is to remove it and bench test it under an electrical load. If you suspect the alternator is bad symptoms include dim headlights, the battery not remaining charged or the car stalling. You can find out more information here:

If your car does not 'turn over', it may possibly need a new alternator. Unlike other car parts, there is not a set mileage that relates to purchasing a new alternator for your car. A simple test you can perform is to disconnect just one wire and that is the postive (red) cable from the battery. If your alternator is in good shape the car will continue to run even with this wire disconnected. If the car stops running, you may need to have the alternator replaced.
