How Do I Make Lined Curtains?

Answer

To make a lined curtain, you first measure all the curtain lengths, marking them with pins or a pencil and then cut out all the lengths. After this join the lining by starting with the widths to make up each curtain then pin the fabric pieces together along the selvages with right sides facing. The next step is to stitch the curtain and lining together. From here, you then stitch on the heading tape and then lastly hem the length.

Curtain linings serve a number of purposes: they protect the curtain material from unwanted sunlight, cover the unfinished side of the curtain and prevent cold from entering the room. To line curtains properly, ensure that the curtain panels and the lining material are cut to the same size. Lay the lining of one panel with the finished side up and the curtain material on top of the lining with the finished side facing down. Align the material and pin together so all edges are even.
Open the top, side and bottom seams on each curtain panel you wish to line with the blackout lining. If your curtain has pleats at the top only open the hem seam at the lower edge of the header. Measure the length of the curtain fabric to the original fold line. Measure the width of the curtain fabric to the original side fold lines. This is your finished width. Choose a blackout lining colour which is usually available in white or off-white. Cut the blackout lining. Hem the bottom of the blackout lining using a one half inch hem. Turn the hem up 1 1/2 inches and stitch. Sew the right edge. Stop sewing just before you reach the blackout lining hem. Press the seam allowances toward the blackout lining. Centre the blackout lining on the fabric.Restitch the original seam lines.
