What are the steps to pebble dash a wall?

Adding pebble dashing to your exterior walls gives your home or building a natural look. However, you need a couple days of pleasant weather along with a few materials to create pebble dashing: cement, lime, plastic sheeting, sand, several large buckets, trowel and water.

  1. Mix the pebble dashing

Mix the lime with water, and leave it covered to hydrate for 24 hours. Then mix 1 part of the slaked lime to 6 parts sand and 1 part cement.

  2. Create the base

Trowel the mixture onto the wall, keeping it level and using its edge to create a smooth, flat layer of the base. After drying for an hour, rake the surface with a notched trowel to create a grooved surface. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.

  3. Prepare the pebbles

Rinse the pebbles well, and drain them completely. Put them in a large bucket or a large flat bin.

  4. Create the top coat

Mix the top coat of 5 parts sand to 1 part slaked lime and 1 part cement. Trowel this onto the wall in a smooth even layer.

  5. Apply the pebbles

Throw the pebbles at the wall after spreading plastic sheeting below the wall. After getting an even coating, lightly press the pebbles into the wall with the flat of the trowel, and let it dry for 24 hours.
