A simple method of home care, R.I.C.E. stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. The NYU Langone Medical Center advises those with sprained toes to avoid using the injured toe for a few days or until the pain subsides. Ice the injured toe up to four times a day for two to three days. If the big toe is injured, use an elastic wrap around it to inhibit unnecessary movement. Elevation is the best way to minimize the swelling associated with a sprain. Keep the injured foot elevated above the heart when possible for the first 48 hours after injury. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and topical creams alleviate some of the discomfort associated with a sprained toe.
The Toe Doctor explains that choosing proper footwear is the single most important way to reduce the chance of repeated injury to the toes. Those with prior injuries need to avoid shoes that force the toes into unnatural positions and must choose shoes that provide all-around protection and stiff soles for sports activities.
