How Do You Protect a Smooth Top Stove When Using an Iron Skillet?

I don't think there is a way to protect the stove. I actually have the same situation going on with my stove. Probably the best thing to do would be to purchased a light weight skillet (something aluminum) and place the iron skillet on top of the aluminum skillet to avoid scratching the smooth top.
