It has been my understanding that cell phone networks can locate your phone as you move around through the use of g.p.s. G.P.S. stands for global positioning system. It tells the cell phone company where you are with the use of a satellite.

To access the file shares directly, you would have to implement an SMB client. I suppose you could pilfer code from Samba's smbclient and see if you can get it building on the iPhone
