A dipole antenna works by receiving waves from each half. Each half is roughly 1/4 wavelength long and its fed from its centre. The ends of the antenna match up to anti-nodes and the centre to nodes. This arrangement causes the antenna to resonate, therefore, the current has to be alike size on both halves.
