# How Does a Ship Float?

A ship floats by being subjected to upward force equal to the weight of water displaced by the ship. Usually, ships are made of big steel parts and have air in them due to their shape. The fact that the density of this combination exerts less downward pressure than the water it displaces enables the ship to float.
