How does affiliate marketing work?

Answer

Affiliate Marketing is basically selling/advertising products for a company. As an Affiliate Marketer, one is given a special URL which holds their user identification so that the company that supplies the link can keep track of the sales referred to their site from the affiliate's site. Every time someone clicks that link the company's database records this and at the end of the day the affiliate marketer is paid per click. It is a marketing technique driven by a 'pay for leads' system. They may vary slightly in how they are structured but generally consist of an alternate site hosting a variety of different offerings within a particular category. By placing your content or products upon that site you hope to drive traffic to your main site. These affiliate sites can be an effective way to drive visitors to your page if their site is heavily trafficked. In return you pay the affiliate either a percentage of the conversions of visitors they sent or an amount based on how many visitors they sent. The problem with most attempts at this type of marketing is that individuals end up paying for traffic that never converted. Most often it is because the site they were sending traffic to was not set up to convert before they initiated the program. This is a big problem that occurs with pay per click also.
