# How Does Current Flow through a Wire?

Current flows through a wire in different ways, depending on whether the wire is using AC or DC current. Direct current (DC) travels through a wire by using the wire's whole width. In DC wiring, the current always flows in only one direction. In alternate current (AC), current usually flows through a wire riding on the surface of the wire. Most businesses and residences use AC current. Audio and radio signals that are carried on electrical wires are also using alternating current.
