Self regulating heat tape works by coming on when the temperature drops. The tape is wrapped around pipes or placed in gutters. It is plugged in to an outlet and when the temperature drops below a certain point, usually around 30 degrees the tape heats up.

Self regulating heat tape works by the use of a thermostat. It enables the tape to shut it's self off and on to prevent overheating damage. It is used to heat not only pipes, but roofs as well.
