The abdominal cavity is separated from the thoracic cavity by the diaphragm. This is a large piece of muscle that is very thin and flat in shape. The diaphragm inserts into the area of the lower ribs and when the muscle contracts it forces the pressure in the abdominal cavity to increase. The movement of the diaphragm causes the air to move in and out of the lungs of the body. This muscle moves throughout the day and even during the resting times when the person sleeps.
