How long do canaries live?

Answer

The average canary's lifespan is approximately 15 years. However, the lifespan of these common pet birds is heavily sexually dimorphic. The average lifespan is skewed higher by the significantly longer lives of male birds.

A male canary that is healthy and carefully taken care of can be expected to live 10 years or more, with some birds surviving to a maximum age of 20 years. Female canaries, in contrast, have an average lifespan of only 6 years. Pawnation attributes this difference in lifespan to the bodily rigors of breeding. Females that aren't bred have a lifespan that is comparable to their male counterparts.
