How long does it take for alcohol to get out of your system?

The body takes about one hour to metabolize each 12-ounce beer, 1.5-ounce shot of liquor or 5-ounce glass of wine ingested. Despite rumors and myths to the contrary, nothing but time speeds up the process.

If the rate of alcohol consumption exceeds the rate at which the liver can remove it from the blood, it takes additional time for the body to get the alcohol out of the person's system. For example, if a person drinks three 1.5-ounce shots within one hour, it takes the liver approximately three hours to rid it from his system. This may cause the effects of alcohol to be felt for hours after the person stops drinking.
