How Long Has the Olympics Been Going on?

The first Olympic games for which we have records took place in 776 BCE, though it is believed they actually started years before that. The ancient games took place every four years over a period of 1,200 years. Because of their pagan influences, a Roman ruler named Theodosius I abolished the games in 393 CE. The first Olympic games held in modern times were the Games of the I Olympiad which took place in Athens Greece in April of 1896. This means the modern Olympic games have been going on for 117 years as of this writing.
