According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the average driver in the United States drives between 12,000 and 15,000 miles each year. As with all averages, there are degrees of differences between groups of drivers, with some groups exceeding 15,000 miles and others falling below 12,000 miles annually.
In all age groups, males drive significantly more miles each year than females, even up to more than twice as many miles. Drivers in the 16- to 19-year-old age group drive the least number of miles annually, while those in the 35- to 54-year-old age group drive the most. Males in the latter group well exceed the 15,000 miles in the average range by approximately 4,000 additional miles. Overall, the male averages over 16,000 miles across the age groups, while the female averages slightly over 10,000 miles.
