# How Many Pounds Can a Helium Balloon Lift?

The number of pounds a helium balloon can lift will be dependent on not only the volume of helium the balloon can hold, but also the weight of the balloon material, and the harness being used to lift said weight. In general, however, helium has a lifting power of one gram per liter of helium. So a balloon that had a volume of five liters, it would have a lifting capability of five grams total - including the weight of the balloon and its harness, which must be factored in. If a human weighed sixty kilograms, we would need roughly 60,000 liters or 12,000 five liter balloons to lift this subject. So the stories of even a small child being lifted off the ground and carried away by a large balloon bouquet cannot be true and are obviously the product of urban legends.
