He was also a political activist. There has long been a rumor that when he died on May 11, 1981 from a malignant melanoma under the nail of one his toenails, that they found many types of lice in his dreadlocks, which was the style in which he wore his hair. This legend is not true. Most people that wear their hair this way keep it as clean as anyone else. There are no records of any lice being found in his hair.
