Depending on its quality and its condition, a Stradivarius violin can range in price from hundreds of thousands to several million dollars. Violins from Antonio Stradivari's "long pattern" period tend to be slightly less expensive than those of his later "golden period."
Recent sales of Stradivarius violins illustrate the exorbitant prices that these instruments command. For example, a "long pattern" period violin called the "Molitor" Stradivarius sold for $3.6 million at auction in 2010. In 2011, the "Lady Blunt" violin sold for an even more stunning $16 million at auction as part of a fundraiser for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
