Since 1998, gas inflated airbags have been mandatory in all cars. They provide an additional level of protection for the driver and front passenger, cushioning the front of the body in case of an accident. Deployed airbags, therefore, must be replaced when a car is repaired after an accident. In many cases, insurance will cover this, but sometimes the car owner will have to pay the price. Not only must the airbags be replaced, but the sensors and mechanical parts that make each airbag work must be replaced as well. Depending on the type of car, with labor involved, airbag replacement can cost from between $1,000 to $6,000.
