Most cable installers keep traditional business hours; however, sometimes evening or weekend work is required. If cable service is knocked out due to severe weather or other emergency, long hours are sometimes needed to restore the signal. A minimum of a high school diploma is typically required to enter the field. Some community colleges offer one-year certificate or two-year associate degree programs that provide the technological training needed for line installers. This may cover several areas, such as electricity, electronics, fiber optics and microwave transmission.
