How Much Money Does a Merchant Marine Make?


In 2013 a ship merchant marine can expect to make somewhere between $35,000 to $100,000 a year depending on their ranking on the ship. The merchant marines are civilian ships that transport supplies normally but operate under the navy in an emergency, very similar to the National Guard. Each of the workers and officers is put through a thorough background check, training, and testing. Pay for these positions is much higher than a normal seaman because they back up the military when needed.
