A person must be at least 21 years of age to rent a car in North Carolina. Even though people can rent a car at 21, until they reach 25 years of age, they are restricted to certain cars.

Most car rental companies in North Carolina restrict individuals aged 21 to 25 to certain types of cars. Under the age of 25, renters can choose from economy, compact, intermediate, standard or premium cars or intermediate or standard SUVs. These individuals are restricted from renting mini-vans and premium SUVs.
