Who is Elton John?


Sir Elton John is an English singer, songwriter and pianist. He is perhaps best known for pop songs such as "Crocodile Rock," "Tiny Dancer," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Circle of Life" and "Benny and the Jets."

Sir Elton John learned to play the piano at age 4 and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11. He left school at age 17 to pursue his career in show business. In 1975, he met lyricist Bernie Taupin. They formed a partnership and wrote songs for popular recording artists such as Roger Cook and "Lulu." Sir Elton John continued to work on his own music and released his first self-titled album in 1970. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Sir Elton John filled stadiums and concert halls through the use of "ridiculous eyeglasses" and "equally outrageous stagewear."

Sir Elton John married Renate Blauel in 1984, but the marriage only lasted four years. Elton John came out officially as a homosexual in 1988. He and long-time partner, producer David Furkish, have two adopted sons. Sir Elton John was inducted into the rock and roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1998.
