How does one become a customs officer?


In order to become a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer, one must be a citizen of the United States and be cleared through a background investigation and medical exam. He must also complete training pass all requirements in order to work for this federal agency.

After applying for a job with the Customs and Border Protection Agency, successful candidates must complete 15 weeks of training at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency facility in Glynco, Ga. In addition, if the individual plans to work in Miami, Fla., Puerto Rico or anywhere along the country's southwestern border, he must complete six weeks of Spanish language training. If an applicant has any experience working in law enforcement or other areas where he has learned specialized skills, such as exercising sounds judgment when making arrests, the ability to use firearms, or developing and maintaining contact with informants, this goes a long way toward ensuring that the he is qualified to begin work as a Customs and Border Protection Officer at a higher rank than someone without these skills. A full year of graduate education in law enforcement or a similar field, such as Criminal Justice or Political Science, may also qualify one for a higher rank.
