How do you keep deer out of your garden?

While there are numerous ways to keep deer out of a garden, the simplest way is to build a fence. This requires fencing that is 10 to 12 feet tall, fence posts, a shovel and clips to attach the fence.

  1. Measure the fence line

Use a tape measure to find the measurement of the perimeter of the area you want to fence.

  2. Purchase the fencing

Deer can jump high, but not over long distances. There are two effective options for fencing. The first option is to purchase fencing that is at least 10 feet high. A deer can only jump approximately 8 feet high, so this option prevents access. Another option is to purchase a shorter fence, approximately 6 feet high, and install it at a 45 degree angle. Deer cannot maintain a jump for the increased distance of the angle. The cross pieces of the fence should be no further than 8 inches apart so the deer cannot squeeze through.

  3. Set the posts, and attach the fence

Dig the post holes and firmly secure the fence posts. For extra stability, concrete may be added to the holes. Attach the fence to the posts, stretching to take up any slack.
