How to Make Compost Tea?

Answer

I use my rain barrels to make compost tea. I place organic material into the rain barrels and then wait for them to fill with rain. When the barrels have water in them, the organic materials that were rotting, steep in the water. This makes the tea. I normally use horse manure as my organic material.

Compost tea is a liquid fertilizer made from compost. Since compost is biologically active, the tea that comes from it is like a probiotic treatment for the garden. To make it, you'll need a 5-gallon bucket, some compost, aquarium tubing, an aquarium pump and bubblers, and some molasses. Fill the bucket half full of compost with the bubblers hooked up to the pump underneath. Fill the bucket nearly to the top with non-chlorinated water and turn on the pump. Once the aeration system is running, add an ounce of molasses to feed the compost bacteria and stir thoroughly. Let this mixture continue to aerate and steep for about 3 days, stirring occasionally. After stirring, check to make sure the bubblers are still evenly spaced at the bottom of the bucket. After 3 days, strain out the liquid and spray it onto your garden.
You will need a mild dish soap, spray bottles, 2 metal buckets, cheesecloth, garden trowels, watering cans, and vegetable oils. It is an ideal liquid fertilizer.
