To read a rain guage, make sure it is empty before the rainfall you want to measure happens. Lift the rain guage so that the top of the water line is at eye level to ensure that it is read correctly. The surface of the water will be slightly curved because of the surface tension. It tends to make it stick to the sides of the container. This is known as a meniscus. Read the height of the water at the base of the meniscus. If the rain guage is filled to the 50 line, 5 of one inch, or one-half inch of rain has fallen. The larger lines are inches. If the guage reads 50 above the one inch line, then it is measuring one and a half inch. If there is little to no water , then you should record that a trace of preciptation fell.
To read a rain gauge, you will have to be very careful to be accurate. The water in the measuring tube has a dip to it called a meniscus. You take your reading from the bottom of the meniscus by finding the division on the measuring tube that is closest to the bottom.
