How to Teach a Child to Tie Shoes?

My children learned to tie their shoes using a piece of wood that had been made into the shape of a shoe sole and had holes drilled into for the lace. With this they can practice anytime. Our kindergarten teacher also used this idea only the shoe sole was made out of heavy cardboard and decorated by the kids.
