How do you treat sunburn blisters?

Answer

WebMD states that there are home remedies that can be used for the treatment of sunburn blisters. Items found in the home, grocery or drug store can aid in healing the sunburn. Soothing creams and over-the-counter medicines are also effective in treating sunburn.

WebMD first suggests applying cool water to the sunburn in the form of compresses and showers and baths. Hydrocortisone creams, aloe vera and chamomile also effectively help with sunburn pain and swelling. It is advised not to place hydrocortisone cream on the rectal or vaginal area and for a person to receive approval from a doctor before using such creams on children younger than 12 years of age. It is advised that sunburn sufferers leave small blisters alone and to protect them with bandages loose enough to leave the skin intact.

A blister may potentially need to be drained depending on the size, and WebMD states that sanitizing a needle or pin with rubbing alcohol before puncturing the blister on its edge is the best way to do so. The area then needs to be washed with soap and water to clean it, not iodine, alcohol or any other cleaning product. Before applying an antibiotic ointment and bandage, the skin should be smoothed over.

WebMD also states that over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin, are also effective in dealing with sunburn-associated fever and pain.
