How do you unlock Yoshi in the New Super Mario Bros?

Answer

Yoshi is not playable in the original "New Super Mario Bros." for the Nintendo DS. However, he does make appearances as a playable character in "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" for the Nintendo Wii and "New Super Mario Bros. U" for the Wii U.

In the first "New Super Mario Bros." game, Yoshi cannot be used in the main single-player game. He is limited to appearing in some of the mini-games and in the multiplayer games along with his blue, red and yellow cousins.

In "New Super Mario Bros. Wii," Yoshi only appears in the main game in certain levels. He can be found and ridden in Worlds 1-3, 2-5, 3-2, 4-5, 6-4 and 7-6. The pink, light blue and yellow varieties may also be seen in addition to the original green Yoshi.

In "New Super Mario Bros. U," Yoshi is available to play in any level. Baby Yoshis also return to the series with this game, their first appearance since the Super Nintendo Entertainment System's "Super Mario World." Baby Yoshis in this game have powers never before seen in the series.

Rumors that Yoshi can be "unlocked" in New Super Mario Bros. or New Super Mario Bros. Wii are untrue.
