The cylinder bore is the diameter of the cylinder, while the crankshaft stroke is the distance the cylinder travels.

For example, one engine has four cylinders each with a bore of 8.1 centimeters with a stroke of 7.76 centimeters. The formula is 0.7854 times 8.1 times 8.1 times 7.76 times 4. This produces a product of 1,599.5 cc. The volume of cylinders is measured with special burettes filled with paraffin.
