# How to Work Out Fractions?

To work out fractions of numbers you have to divide the number by the denominator then multiply it by the numerator.
If you were to work out a fraction by reducing it then you would have to factor the numerator and the denominator. Cancel out a fraction that mixes with the value of 1. Afterwards re-write your answer as the reduced fraction.
The easiest fractions to work out are those that have common denominators. To add this kind of fractions, simply add the two numerators together and then place that sum over the common denominator. To subtract them, simply subtract the two numerators and then place answer over the common denominator. To multiply the fractions, simply multiply the numerators together and the denominators, and then place the product of the numerators over that of the denominators.
To know how to work out fractions, you need to start from the basics. A fraction is defined as 'a part of a whole'. Any mathematical operation such as addition, multiplication, division and subtraction, which you can perform on a whole number, can also be performed on a fraction.
You can work out fractions by dividing the top number into the bottom number to find a decimal number. If the top number is bigger then the bottom number, then there will be a whole number in front of the decimal.
