What is the importance of the English language?

The English language is very important because, according to Eastborne School of English, it's the language used in business and everyday life all around the world. It's spoken by over two billion people, and 50 percent of Internet content is written in English. Without understanding English, an individual can miss out on many opportunities in education as well as the professional world.

According to About.com, "English is now the language most widely taught as a foreign language." Most people understand that speaking English fluently increases their chances of finding a good job in the global economy. About.com also states that English is an official language or has a special status in 75 countries. As a result, English is constantly evolving and, according to BBC News, it's been estimated that a new word is added every 98 minutes. Most of these new words have been created to reflect a more modern usage. For example, recently the word "phablet" has been added, which means a device between a smartphone and a tablet. Many words are also borrowed from different languages. It's also been noted that Shakespeare invented many of the words used in his plays, such as assassinate, impartial and worthless. This demonstrates that having a command of English is essential in today's society, but also it's important to keep up with changes to the language as well.
