His brother, Ira, wrote most of the brothers' lyrics, and Ira was very dependent upon him for creative input and inspiration. George Gershwin won a Pulitzer Prize in 1931 for the composition 'Of Thee I Sing.' What was most striking about George was his dogged persistence in promoting his now-famous musical, 'Porgy and Bess,' during a time (1935) when very few people in the entertainment industry provided opportunities for high school dropouts to prove their talent. George never finished high school, turning full-time to music composition.George was a 1970 menber of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
