Bea Arthur was a female actor and comedienne who was born in New York City on May 13, 1922. Her birth name was Bernice Frankel.

Arthur's most notable works were the TV sitcoms "Maude" and "The Golden Girls," where she played the title character and lead character respectively. Arthur won an Emmy for her work as Dorothy Zbornak on "The Golden Girls." She won a Tony for her role as Vera Charles in the Broadway musical "Mame." Arthur died of lung cancer on April 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, Calif. Broadway's theater marquees were dimmed in her honor on April 28, 2009.
