Hines Ward is best known as the wide receiver in the NFL who played for many years on the Pittsburgh Steelers and charmed the hearts of America during his appearance on Season 12 of Dancing with the Stars. Born in South Korea to an African-American father and a Korean mother, Ward grew up in the Atlanta area, mostly in the care of his paternal grandfather.
Ward played football for Forest Park High School in Forest Park, Georgia and went on to star as wide receiver for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. Ward was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1998 NFL draft. He would go one to play for the Steelers for 13 years, winning 3 MVPs, 2 Super Bowl championships, 4 Pro Bowl selections, and 3 AFC championships during his time there. The Steelers released Ward in 2012 and Ward announced his retirement from football a few days thereafter.
Aside from his illustrious career as a wide receiver, Ward also bears the distinction of having won Season 12 of Dancing with the Stars, along with his dance partner Kym Johnson. The pair earned high scores throughout the competition and clinched their victory with near perfect scores on the quickstep and freestyle. This appearance thrust Ward into an even brighter spotlight in American popular culture than he had enjoyed before. In 2012, Ward was signed by NBC Sports as a football analyst.
He currently lives in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Ward has a son named Jaden with his ex-wife, Simone Ward, with whom he agreed to a divorce in 2008.
