Why does poop sink or float?

Answer

The amount of gas and fat in human stool determines whether it sinks or floats. Human stools typically sink in the toilet; however, floating stools do not normally signal a health problem. Stools are chiefly composed of food residue, bacteria, mucous, parasites, dead cells and water. If the relative ratios of these items change, it can affect the buoyancy of feces. People that eat a lot of gas-causing foods, such as soda, apples, starches, milk, cabbage, beans or sugar-free foods, may produce floating poop more often than those who avoid such gas-causing foods.

Malabsorption can also cause floating, gas-laden stools. Malabsorption, which frequently results from a bacterial or viral infection in the lower intestine, allows food to travel through the digestive system too quickly. Celiac disease, a condition in which the small intestine experiences autoimmune reactions in the presence of gluten, also causes floating stools. Finally, shortened bowel syndrome, which causes malabsorption, also causes afflicted individuals to have floating stools.

People without malabsorption, celiac disease or short bowel syndrome can usually treat their floating stools at home. Most experts recommend that people keep food journal. This makes it easy to determine which foods are causing an excess amount of gas.
